In North, people use blasphemy threat to avoid paying debt, man laments murder of Sokoto butcher

A Twitter user, @ZariyiYusufu, has lamented the killing of a butcher in Sokoto, Usman Buda, over Islamic doctrinal differences with his colleagues.

TheNiche had reported that an eyewitness said Buda was killed when some of his colleagues engaged him in a theological debate over the subject of blasphemy. One of his debaters then turned round to scream that Buda was guilty of blasphemy. In seconds, hundreds of passersby carried stones and pummeled Buda to death.

A Twitter user, Zariyi Yusufu, quoting an Islamic cleric, said the threat of blasphemy charge, is now being used to evade debt repayment.

He said: “An Islamic cleric said about the killing of Usman Buda, ‘… it’s so bad that if you owed a man money and he disturbed you about repayment, you could get him off your back by chanting, ‘blasphemy!’.

“Usman Buda was lynched because of doctrinal difference.

I understand there are calls to arrest and set an example of those behind his murder…”
