I ensured job security for Bauchi workers, says re-elected labour leader

Mr Hamisu Gital, the re-elected Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Bauchi State, on Tuesday said that he was able to ensure job security for workers in the last four years.

Gital said this in Bauchi while speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on his second term mandate.

“ I have maintained job security for civil servants in Bauchi State inspite of the economic meltdown and threats by the government to downsize the civil service.

” We were able to contain the threat and no single civil servant was retrenched.

“ Again we were able to intervene over the 2,007 teachers disengaged and they were re-engaged by the government.

“ We were the first state in the federation after my election to implement the N18,000 minimum wage without embarking on strike.

“ Others, even after embarking on strike, implemented the new wage only one year after,” he said.

Gital said he also ensured that there was peace in the trade union movement resulting in harmonious relationship between NLC and TUC.

He , however, stressed the need for sustained unity in the trade unions in the state to enable the NLC excel, pledging that he would continue to preach the gospel of ” injury to one is injury to all.”

Gital gave an assurance that he would encourage the participation of trade unions in activities of the State Executive Council of the union during his second term.

The chairman also said that the NLC would conduct elections into various positions in the 20 local government areas of the state within one week.

He expressed gratitude to civil servants in the state for giving him another term, assuring them of renewed commitment to service.
