About three persons, including two policemen have been reportedly killed when armed robbers attacked the Lapai branches of UBA and First Bank in Lapai, Lapai council of Niger State and carted away unspecified sums of money.
The armed bandits also did not spare Lapai Police station.
The robbers numbering about 10 had gained access into the affected banks like any other customers, but with their guns concealed inside their bags after beating security checks.
Eyewitness said that the robbers had arrived one of the banks at about closing hours when many customers were rushing for the last minute banking in what many believed to be ‘leaked information’ that the banks received large sums of money, including workers’ salaries.
The source said that immediately the robbers entered, they demobilised the policemen guarding the banks who were apparently taken by surprise by the invading criminals before proceeding into the bulk room.
Details of the casualties and identities of the police officers that lost their lives in the attack could not be ascertained as at the time of this report because the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mrs. Abigael Unaeze, could not be reached.
Meanwhile, the recent spate of attack in banks has sent fears to customers who are expressing fears of more attacks in such facilities with the festivities around the corner and therefore want more security beef up in financial institutions.
