Tobi Amusan will probably go down as the first Nigerian beneficiary of the new false start rule which came into force in January 2023 to make history as the first woman to win three straight African Games 100m hurdles title.
The 26 year old false started in the final of the event at the sports ground of the University of Ghana but was only flashed a yellow card in line with the new rule.
The rule states that only one false start per race is allowed without the disqualification of the athlete(s) making the false start. Any athlete(s) making further false starts in the race shall be disqualified.
Amusan eventually stormed home first in 12.89 after the restart to make history as the first sprint hurdler to win the the 100m hurdles three consecutive times and the third Nigerian to win an African Games event three straight times after Vivian Chukwuemeka (shot put) and Adewale Olukoju (discus throw
