Officers of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to the shocking horror of all civilised bystandaers, turned crude, rough and uncivilised agents to re-arrest Ziakedi Akpobolokemi outside the premises of the Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday.
The violent re-arrest came moments after the trial of the former director-general of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for N2.6bn fraud was adjourned till January 18.
He was walking towards his car in the company of his lawyers when the EFCC officers accosted him and an argument ensued.
“I am not going anywhere,” he screamed on top of his voice, as he struggled with them.
With the support of armed mobile policemen, the operatives resorted to jungle behaviour, overpowered Akpobolokemi like a common criminal and thrusted the respected citizen presumed innocent till proved guilty into a white Toyota Hiace bus.
His phone fell on the ground while he was being dragged, as Joseph Nwobike, his lawyer, watched helplessly. He was released from prison custody on Friday after fulfilling his bail condition of N50 million.
The anti-graft agency preferred a 22-count charge of conversion and stealing against Akpobolokemi and five others.
After pleading not guilty to the charge, they were granted N50 million bail each, with two sureties each in like sum.
Akpobolokemi is also standing trial for N3.4bn fraud charges before Justice Saliu Saidu of the same court.
The trial has been adjourned till January 29.
