Heartland FC coach, Christian Obi, dies as team’s bus crashes in Imo

Former Nigeria international and head coach of Heartland FC, Christian Obi, has died in an accident involving the team.

The accident occurred in Okigwe enroute Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, where the Naze Millionaires were to participate in the Ifeanyi Ekwueme TICO/SELECT preseason tournament, according to a statement on the club’s Facebook page.

Some players and other officials sustained injuries and have been taken to the hospital for treatment.

The statement said: “The accident happened at Umunna close to Okigwe still within Imo State.

“The vehicle in its attempt to dodge an uncoming vehicle collided with another carelessly parked vehicle from another accident.”

The club at the time said no death was recorded but some players and officials sustained injuries and have been taken to the hospital.

One of Obi’s best moments for Nigeria was when he championed Nigeria to win bronze at the 1985 World Youth Championship, against host, Soviet Union.

He also competed in the Men’s Football Tournament of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.
