Half year scorecard: Tincan Customs nets N130b

The Nigeria Customs Service, Tincan Island Command, Lagos said it collected a total of N130,006,136,996.36 between January to June, 2017 into the Federation coffers.
The command’s revenue statistics have been on the increase since January showing a progression in customs operation despite copious challenges which includes low volume of trade and seemingly unfriendly exchange rate between the Nigerian naira and US Dollar
Confirming the figure which was contained in a document made available to journalists, Uche Ejesieme, Customs Public Relations Officer said the command is committed to increasing revenue collection, fighting smuggling and facilitating legitimate trade.
According to the document, the command collected a sum of N19,834,314,976.00 in January ; N21,048,128,157.91 in February; N20,957,382,354.00 in March and N20,314,845,027.39 for April 2017
In the months of May and June, the command collected N23,879,670,813.35 and N23,971,795,667.71 respectively.
Ejesieme said the Customs Area Controller, Yusuf Bashar is not relenting in his pursuit of the service goals and aspirations. He added that even in the face of declining import, revenue collection under Bashar’s watch have continued to increase as it tries to sustain a daily average of N1 billion.
Ejesieme added that the command is committed to applying information communication technology (ICT) techniques in detecting suspicious imports and exports while preventing smuggling and revenue leakages .
The command has earned four commendation certificates from the Controller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali, for various feats which includes prevention of revenue leakages, detection of four attempts at smuggling arms and ammunition into Nigeria.
Some two months ago , the command made a mind boggling seizure of 441 units of pump action rifles concealed with white cement in a container.
