Gunmen kill five in Ogun community

Gunmen suspected to be oil pipeline vandals on Wednesday night invaded Warewa in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State and killed the manager of ‘pure’ water firm and four others.

The gunmen, who came through the creek, invaded Banku community in Warewa about 9pm in an attempt to kill a businessman who was abducted last month and collected N10 million from his family before releasing him last Friday.

The kidnappers were said to have arrived the community on Wednesday night to pick another businessman in the community only to mistake him for the yet-to-be-identified ‘pure’ water company manager.

It was learnt that after they had searched the businessman’s house and did not find him, the gunmen then moved to his second house where they met the manager.

Thinking he was their target, they assailants, according to witnesses, dragged the manager out of his house and shot him in the chest.

This was done in the presence of his family members. Thereafter, the gunmen started shooting sporadically as they fled from the scene. The gunmen stopped three bricklayers, who were returning from where they went to buy food and asked to lie face down. They shot the bricklayers in the back. A 22-year-old man, Saheed Olanure, who was returning from the mosque, was hit by stray bullet. Olanure, said to be a bus conductor, died on the spot.

It was learnt that some of the residents also sustained varying degrees of injury while running helter-skelter.

A resident, who identified himself simply as John, said the gunshot rent the air for about 30 minutes without being challenged by security agents.

He said: “After a few minutes, some vigilantes in the community mobilised themselves and confronted them. But the gunmen overpowered the vigilantes who later ran to Warewa Police Station to call for back up. However, before the arrival of the policemen, the gunmen had escaped through the creek.”
