Group cautions truck drivers on reckless driving

The National Secretary of Heavy Duty and Haulage and Transport Association of Nigeria, Elvis Okolie, has cautioned truck drivers against reckless driving on the highway.

Okolie gave the advice in Enugu on Thursday during a sensitization meeting /inauguration of the state chapter of the association.

He lamented the way and manner some truck drivers drive recklessly on the highway, which, according to him, has led to death of many people as well as destruction of goods.

He explained that Heavy Duty and Haulage Transport Association of Nigeria is an organisation registered with CAC that is in full partnership with the Federal Governent of Nigeria to solve certain problems in the transport sector.

He said that the inauguration of the association became necessary following diversion of goods and trucks by drivers as well as refusal to obey traffick rules by truck drivers and abandonment of broken down vehicles on the highways.

Okolie exposed worry over the attitude of some truck drivers which he described as scaring, saying, statistics shows that most of these drivers operate under the influence of alcohol and narcotics, which, according to him, will no longer be tolerated.

He vowed that any truck driver found violating the law would be dealt with according to the law of the land, adding, “We are working with the Federal Government and Federal Road Safety Officers to tackle the traffic rules offenders.

“Our operations are to generate the biometrics data that would be used to locate any defaulting vehicle or any truck driver either through the actual owner of the vehicle or the owner of the goods as well as make sure those under the influence of alcohol would be punished.”

He assured that the association would always train and re-train their members to ensure they maintain law and order while on the highway.
