Govt declares public holiday on Monday

Monday, May 2, 2016, has been declared a national public holiday to commemorate the 2016 Workers’ Day celebration.

According to The Punch, this declaration was made by Nigeria’s minister of Interior, Lt Gen Abdulrahman Dambazau, on behalf of the government.

He also congratulated Nigerian workers for “their resilience, hard work and commitment to the change mantra of President Muhammadu Buhari, despite current challenges.”

Bassey Akpanyung, the permanent secretary of the ministry, who released a statement on behalf of the minister, also enjoined the workers to continue to support the president in fight against corruption.

The minister also “urged Nigerian workers to re-dedicate themselves to the service of the nation and remain productive for the growth and development of the country.”

May 1 is a day set aside in Nigeria to celebrate the workers and any time it falls on a weekend. it is observed on the next working day.

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), NULGE, RTEAN, are among some groups that march round to celebrate the day set aside for workers.
