The ongoing road construction on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway resulted to a puncture of gas pipeline on Wednesday, December 16. The incident created hysteria among road users and construction workers who scampered for safety, abandoning their vehicles and tools.

The incident occurred during the ongoing road expansion being done by Julius Berger along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. It happened at about 9.50 am in front of The Punch Place, the headquarters of Punch Newspaper.

The smell of gas and the screams by eye witnesses, created a stampede, causing injuries to many who tried to flee the area on foot.

Ibrahim Farinloye, the Lagos state acting coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said normalcy has returned to the road and that commuters could resume plying the road.

He said officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Nigeria Gas Company have been mobilised to the scene to remedy the leaking pipeline.
