France became the first team to qualify for the knockout stages in the 2022 World Cup after edging past Denmark in a game played at Stadium 974, Doha on Saturday evening.

The defending champions, who won against Australia in their first match,   opened their account in the 61st minute when Kylian Mbappe scored after a pass from Theo Hernandez.

Prior to the goal, Mbappe had earlier blazed over from 12 yards and forced Kasper Schmeichel into a save with a rising shot.

Barcelona defender, Andreas Christensen, equalised for Denmark in the 68th minute when he steered a header into the back of the net after lashing on a flick from Joachim Andersen.

Christensen, though, may have counted himself lucky to still be on the pitch at that point after receiving only a yellow card on 20 minutes for dragging back Mbappe, who was looking to run clear

Hugo Lloris made a sharp stop to keep out Tottenham team-mate Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s first-time shot while Martin Braithwaite agonisingly fired into the side netting.

But with four minutes left, ‘Les Bleus’ secured the 3 points on offer when a cross by Antoine Griezmann successfully found Kylian Mbappe who scored with his right foot to make it 2-1 to France.
