Foremost Journalist and first civilian Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, is dead. According to New Telegraph newspapers, Jakande, former Minister of Works passed on Thursday morning in Lagos, at 91.
The deceased politician who was governor of Lagos State in Nigeria from 1979 to 1983, and later was Minister of Works under the Sani Abacha military regime (1993–98), was a member of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) during the second republic. His tenure in Lagos state was hallmarked by many laudable programmes, including free education from Primary to Secondary levels, qualitative health services, affordable housing scheme and other progressive activities.
