The Executive Director of the United Nations Populations Fund, UNFPA, Prof Babatunde Osotimehin, is dead.
Osotimehin, who was Nigeria’s health minister and head of National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) died on Sunday, his family said in a statement on Monday.
Born on February 6, 1949, the 68-year-old professor of medicine was also a former Provost of the College of Medicine at the University of Ibadan.
He was appointed the fourth Executive Director of UNFPA in November 2010 and was reappointed in August 2014.
He was until his death the executive director of the United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA).
Osotimehin attended Igbobi College, Lagos between 1966 and 1971.
After his medical studies at University of Ibadan, he received a doctorate in medicine from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, in 1979
He was provost of the College of Medicine at the University of Ibadan from 1990 to 1994.
The Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun indigene served as chairman, National Action Committee on AIDS, Nigeria, from July 2002 to March 2007 and as director-general of NACA from March 2007 to December 2008.
He succeeded Professor Adenike Grange as Nigeria’s minister of health on December 17, 2008 and was relieved of the position by then acting President Goodluck Jonathan on March 17, 2010.
As chairman of the National Action Committee on AIDS, he oversaw the development of systems that, today, manage more than US$1billion.
