First Lady in Senate chambers to witness the laying of the report of the Senate Constitution Review Committee

The Senate on Wednesday had an august visitor in the person of the First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari.

It was a dramatic appearance as Mrs. Buhari made what is probably the first visit by a sitting First Lady to the Red Chamber since 1999, if not since Nigeria’s independence in 1960.

Presidential historians say Mrs Buhari’s visit to the Chambers is historical as she appears to be the first wife of a President to be received into the Senate Chambers.

She is in the Senate chambers to witness the laying of the report of the Senate Constitution Review Committee.

It is not yet clear whether she is there in her own capacity or representing her husband, President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mrs. Buhari hardly represents her husband in any official capacity.

It is also not clear why she chose to witness the laying of the report of the Senate Constitution Review Committee, that is, if she came on her own.

But apparently, the Senate leadership was aware of her coming because the submission of the report was delayed during the proceedings to allow Aisha Buhari to arrive.

The First Lady, who was ushered into the Senate chamber at 12.01 pm, was accompanied on the visit by the Minister of Women Affairs Mrs Paullen Tallen; Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed and some of her personal aides.

Meanwhile, Deputy President of the Senate and Chairman, Senate Committee on the Alteration to the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has moved that the Senate do receive the report of the Committee and the motion was seconded by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Women Affairs, Senator Betty Apiafi.

She is still in the Senate Chambers at the time of filing this report.
