Some unclaimed Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) have been reportedly burnt inside the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Umu-Ikaa, in the Isiala- Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State.

The Niche learnt that the fire started in the early hours of Sunday, February 3.

The fire, it was gathered, woke up some youths in the area, who immediately mobilised and alerted the police for action.

It was through the joint effort of the police and the youths that the fire was put out.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Geoffrey Ogbonna, said that suspected hoodlums had poured fuel through the window of the office where the PVCs were kept and set fire on them.

Ogbonna said that the fire did not consume the entire building.

According to him, “We are investigating what happened. Only the voter registers and the PVCs were affected by the fire.”

It was learnt that INEC workers in the local government relocated to the office on Tuesday after their former office was burnt down four years ago.
