FIFA announces date for Scotland, Ukraine World Cup playoff

FIFA also confirmed that the winner of the encounter will face Wales, who beat Austria in the World Cup play-off final in Cardiff on June 5

World football governing body, FIFA has fixed Scotland’s 2022 World Cup play-off semi-final match against Ukraine for June 1 in Glasgow. 

The match was originally scheduled to be played on 24th March but The Football Association of Ukraine urged FIFA to postpone it amid Russia’s invasion of their country.

FIFA, thereafter, granted their request and announced a new date for the match will be communicated.

“Fifa can confirm it has received a request from the Ukrainian Association of Football today to postpone their matches scheduled for March. 

“Fifa expresses its deepest solidarity to everybody affected by what is happening in Ukraine. A further update will be provided in due course.” football’s governing body said in a statement.

FIFA, after announcing a new date for the match, also confirmed that the winners of Scotland vs Ukraine match will face Wales, who beat Austria in the World Cup play-off final in Cardiff on June 5. 

The winner of the rescheduled World Cup play-off final will then claim one of the three remaining slots at the tournament in Qatar later in the year. 

The winners of the encounter will also join  England, the United States, and Iran in Group B of the 2022 World Cup.
