FG lauds Super Falcons, charges them to beat Ireland 

FG in a statement made available on Thursday, also praised the coaches and NFF for doing a very good job

The Federal Government of Nigeria through the Ministry of Sports has commended the Super Falcons after they defeated 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup co-hosts, Australia in Brisbane. 

Alhaji Ismaila Abubakar, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Sports and Youth Development made this known on Thursday in Abuja, through a statement issued by Mohammed Manga, Director Press in the ministry.

The FG in the statement also charged the Nigerian girls not to rest on their oars after their 3-2 win over  Australia in their second group stage tie.

It went on to urge Randy Waldrum’s side to give their 100 per cent in their next game against Republic of Ireland, assuring them that Nigerians are solidly behind them.

The FG further praised Super Falcons coaches and the Nigerian Football Federation for a job well done.  

Abubakar said, “We have followed your games and want to thank you for making the nation proud, thus putting a smile on the faces of Nigerians.

“We commend you, your coaches and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) for the good job done so far.

“You cannot afford to rest on your oars, take the next game against the Republic of Ireland with full determination to succeed as you took your first two games.

“Give it your very best, which is your 100 per cent assurance to win. We are solidly behind you.”

Nigeria edged past Australia in front of their fans and a packed stadium in a second Group B game played at the Suncorp Stadium on Thursday morning.  

Goals from Uchenna Kanu, Osinachi Ohale and Asisat Oshoala ensured the Super Falcons topped the group after the host opened the scoring through Emily van Egmond and Alanna Kennedy got a consolation goal in additional time for the home side.
