—Groups seek rebirth of Edo nursing school
Lighthouse Polytechnic, Evbuobanosa near Benin City, Edo State has been granted approval to run the Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes by the Federal Government.
The approval which was conveyed to the authorities of Lighthouse Polytechnic last week by the Federal Ministry of Education through the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), said the approval was consequent upon the recent visit of the accreditation team of NBTE in October last year.
According to the NBTE letter, Lighthouse Polytechnic is now approved to offer HND courses in Accountancy, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Technology.
The new ND courses include Banking and Finance, Public Administration and Statistics.
The NBTE further stated that “admission of students into the programme should commence from the 2014/2015 academic session”.
Meanwhile, a cross section of female Leaders of thoughts in Edo state on have called for an end to the dwindling fortunes of Edo state school of Nursing and Midwifery.
The concern mothers’ appeal came three years after the school accreditation was withdrawn by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria over by infrastructural decay and shortage of qualified medical personnel.
State chairperson of the Nigerian association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Comrade Amina Eboh at a press briefing on Wednesday in Benin City, urged Governor Adams Oshiomhole to urgently address “the myriads of problems the school is faced with’’.
Eboh expressed worries that at the end of the present session, the school may suspend enrolment of new intake of students unless urgent steps were taken to upgrade the school.
Executive Director of Uyiosa Orphanage home and widows’ Ministry, Mary Igunbor appealed to well-meaning individuals including Non-Governmental Organizations and churches to salvage the situation from drifting further.
Igunbor, an Alumnus of the state school of nursing/Midwifery, said: “the state Governor is aware of the deteriorating state of the school’’.
On her part, President, National Council of women societies, Omoluru Agbokhae Eniye, described the development as avoidable, stating that graduates of the institution are been discriminated against in search for jobs since the withdrawal of accreditation saga began.
Eniye called on the state Governor to take proactive steps through relevant Ministry with a view to redeem the integrity of the school.
