Female wrestler, Genesis, wins Nigeria’s 9th Gold Medal

Team Nigeria has secured its 9th gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games taking place in Birmingham, England.

This feat was achieved when female wrestler, Mercy Genesis, defeated her Canadian opponent, Madison Parks in the final of the female 50kg freestyle wrestling event.

Genesis, a freestyle wrestler, participated at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she competed in the women’s freestyle -48 kg.

Prior to winning the gold in this year’s Commonwealth Games, she won a silver medal in the women’s 50 kg beach wrestling event tagged  ‘World Beach Game’ held in Doha, Qatar In 2019. 

A year later, the 24-year-old won a gold medal in the women’s freestyle 50 kg event at the 2020 African Wrestling Championships.

She is, however, not the only Nigerian who got on the podium on the day, male freestyle wrestler, Welson Ebikewemino won the Silver medal in the 57kg category.

While a female boxer, Cynthia Ogunsemilore, also picked up a Bronze medal in the Women’s Over 57kg-60kg lightweight boxing category after losing 5-0 in the semifinal to Any Sara Broadhurst of Northern Ireland.
