Two female suicide bombers were yesterday killed by explosives concealed on one of them at Auno village along Maiduguri-Damaturu road, witnesses said.

About 10 people, including vigilante members, bystanders and people fetching water were wounded.

Residents said the bombers aged between 14 and 15 targeted people at a spot where residents and herders fetch water.

The incident occurred around 1.30pm, witnesses said.

Ajiya Bukar, a resident of Auno said alarm was raised when the two girls asked for water to drink.

“Their request was granted and after drinking the water. But when the vigilantes, who normally come to Auno from Jimtilo for routine surveillance approached the girls and started asking questions from a distance, one of them removed her Hijab and the bombs strapped to her body became visible. And before the vigilantes could do anything, she blew herself up and was torn to pieces. Her accomplice also died on the spot, but the bomb strapped to her body did not explode. A security source confirmed the incident.
