Farotimi’s Arrest: POM condemns police interference in civil matter

A civil society organization, Peoples Organic Movement (POM), has condemned what it describes as the Gestapo-style arrest of human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, by the police in Lagos.

A statement by Pastor Ime-James, convener of the group said the unwarranted arrest not only showed a blatant disregard for Mr. Farotimi’s human rights but also harassed his domestic staff in the process.

According to Pastor Ime-James, “This arrest is a clear indication of the lack of respect for human rights and the rule of law in our democracy. It is unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms.”

The statement added: “Mr. Farotimi’s arrest is particularly disturbing given that the matter involved a senior advocate of Nigeria, Aare Afe Babalola, who should know that this case is purely a civil matter that can be settled by the law court and not intimidate Mr Farotimi with the Police. “

As Pastor Ime-James noted, “Barr Dele Farotimi had, twice reported himself to the police in Lagos, making this public spectacle completely unnecessary.”

The group demanded the immediate release of Farotimi and calls for the authorities to follow the rule of law.

It added: “We will continue to monitor the situation and advocate for the protection of human rights in Nigeria.”
