Fact-checks: Olawunmi, ex-Naval officer lied on NDA attacks, Major Datong

The credibility of Retired Commodore Kunle Olawunmi, who achieved prominence with his recent remarks on federal government’s poor handling of insecurity in the country, has come to question following discovery of some gaps in his submissions.

Olawunmi, who was a guest at a recent Channels Television morning programme, had accused the federal government of not prosecuting the insurgency war diligently. He made sensitive revelations that cast doubts on the seriousness of the Buhari administration to end the war on insurgency.

Responding to question on the recent attack on the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) which led to the death of two officers and abduction of Major Christopher Datong, the ex-naval officer claimed that the Major had been killed by his abductors and his corpse discovered.

“You may not know. I don’t know whether it’s out in the news that the major has been killed.

“I belong to some groups and I know about three hours ago, his body was found. He has been killed. so, it’s not about ransom” he asserted.

In a curious twist, the Army officer, has been rescued by the military from the bandits. There have been pictures of the Major reunited with his family.

The news of the rescue of the army officer by the joint military task force has since made Nigerians bring back the video clip of Olawunmi’s claim that the officer was dead, on social media platforms. TheNiche newspaper after obtaining the video clip fact checked his claims on Major Datong and discovered the blunder, given that the officer has been rescued and reunited with his family.

The development has cast credibility on the retired officer and his assertions on the television show.
