Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Sunday Rotimi, says the planned Victor Ezeji testimonial would set a precedent for other Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) players to emulate.
Ezeji, legendary NPFL striker, recently announced his intention for one final game, as he hangs up his boots for good after 20 seasons in Nigeria’s top flight and followed it up with the inauguration of an organising committee to make it a match with a difference.
Rotimi believes the testimonial match, which will be the first of its kind by any league player in Nigeria, should be commended and called on everyone to support it.
“This is the first time that such is going to take place. I think it is a great achievement. To us the other players in the local league, this is a morale booster and a foundation for the future.
“It’s a good one from Victor and the local players would give him all the support because this is a great thing he is bringing to the local scene.”
Rotimi, Rivers United shot stopper, described Ezeji as a disciplined and dedicated player whom he played with both as a team mate and an opponent, saying such traits made him the fine player he was during his playing career.
Said Rotimi: “I know Ezeji as we have played together. He is a man of integrity. He is someone that is very strict and he is someone who is very talented.
“If I may say, he is one of the toughest opponents I have ever faced. He is a very experienced attacker and has given a lot for local football in the country.”
He promised to make himself available if called upon to play for either Team Ezeji or Team LMC in the testimonial as it would be an honour to be part of a history making event in honour of a Nigerian football legend.
“I am supporting him for his bold step and I believe it is just the beginning. I will be grateful for the honour if I am called to play because it is not easy.
“If I am called upon I think it will be a great achievement being part of this testimonial match.
The testimonial is billed for the end of the year at a venue in the Garden City of Port Harcourt which is yet to be announced.
