Residents of Enugu were overwhelmed with excitement on Wednesday as the Spiritual Director of the Adoration Ministries Enugu Nigeria (AMEN), Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, returned to the state.

The controversial priest was last year directed to go into solitude at a monastery after breaching the church’s rules.

In November 2022, Mbaka made videos and took pictures of himself at St Andrew’s Abbey Monastery in the United States and posted them on Facebook.

Mbaka’s transfer came shortly after the adoration ground was reopened following a ban on the ministry’s activities for several months last year.

The Bishop of Enugu Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga, thereafter, turned the ministry into a chaplaincy to monitor its activities and appointed Fr. Anthony Amadi to replace Mbaka as Chaplain of the Ministry, a development that was initially resisted by Mbaka’s followers.

Mbaka was also banned from commenting on political issues.

However, on Wednesday, hundreds of Mbaka’s supporters trooped out on the road to welcome him.

They marched alongside the vehicle, which conveyed him to the adoration ground, in Umuchigbo, Nike, causing traffic gridlock along the old Emene-Abakaliki road.

It was not clear whether the charismatic priest would resume duties at the adoration ground.
