Excellent drainage systems’ll make roads last longer – NSE Fellow

East-West Road

Mrs Ibilola Amao, Fellow of Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) says the only way roads in the country can last longer is by building good drainage systems along them.

Amao, a consulting engineer made the suggestion in an interview with NAN in Lagos Wednesday.

She urged Nigerians to always engage professional engineers to supervise their building projects to guard against incessant building collapse in the country.

“The primary thing for roads to last longer is to have excellent drainage. If you do not have excellent drainage, the water on the surface of the roads will erode the materials you have used to construct the road.

“So we need to focus more on designing and building exceptionally good drainage systems, which will take the water off the surface of the roads and will reduce erosion.

“Traditionally, we’ve built a storey or two-storeys, nowadays because of the cost of land people are taking three-storey, four-storey buildings and higher buildings.

“The technology and the techniques and the quality control and the quality assurance required to build three-storey-and-above buildings are totally different from the very mundane artisan type mechanics we use for single-storey buildings.

“We need to use regulated engineering services, we need to get chartered engineers, and qualified engineers to not only design the structures.

“But also supervise the use of the right quality of material to build these three-storey-and-above buildings.’’
