A Danish court has sentenced former Golden Eaglets forward, Akinkunmi Amoo to a one-year jail term after he was found guilty of sexual assault.

The Nigerian who currently plays for F.C Copenhagen in the Danish Superliga is, however, expected to appeal the court’s decision.

According to Danish newspaper, Ekstra Bladet, the 21-year-old winger was charged with rape, as well as attempted rape and violations of two other women.

He was initially charged by the Danish authorities in April 2022, and then again in July and August of the same year.

Prior to being found guilty of all three charges in the Copenhagen District Court, the trial has been going on for most of June 2023.

Amoo will be deported after serving the jail term and thereafter be banned from entering Denmark for six years, leaving his footballing career in jeopardy.

He was part of the Golden Eaglets side that represented Nigeria at the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil.

After the age grade World Cup, he reportedly turned down a move to Monaco and Milan before joining Swedish club Hammarby IF, on a four-year contract in 2020, shortly after his 18th birthday.

Amoo made his competitive debut in Allsvenskan on September 14, 2020, in a 2–2 home draw against Helsingborgs IF.

On November 10, 2020, he scored a brace, his first competitive goal for Hammarby IF, in a 5–0 win against FC Gute in Svenska Cupen, the Swedish main domestic cup.

He later signed for Danish side FC Copenhagen, in 2022.
