CBN Gov Emefiele

Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele has been allegedly suspended by the authorities.

TheNiche learnt authoritatively on Monday that Emefiele was suspended from office on the orders of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The reason for his alleged suspension was not immediately known, but our source said Emefiele had been asked to hand over to another person within two weeks of his alleged suspension.

TheNiche learnt that CBN sources also told Elombah News that Emefiele had also been asked to hand over to an unnamed successor within two weeks.

“The letter to that effect was handed to the CBN governor this morning”, the source told Elombah News.

When the Director of Media Communications, Isaac Okoroafor was contacted on the development, he did not respond to calls to his cell phone by this newspaper.

Okoroafor however responded to the SMS sent to his phone at press time, saying, “it is not true”.

However, our source said Emefiele is as good as gone as no CBN governor who was suspended ever returns to the seat.

Emefiele’s term as CBN governor expires this year.

Section eight of the CBN Act of 2007 says a CBN governor can be removed by the president “provided that the removal of the Governor shall be supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate praying that he be so removed”.

Section 10 of the CBN Act prescribes that “the Governor and Deputy Governors shall be appointed in the first instance for a term of five years and shall each be eligible for re-appointment for another term not exceeding five years.”

Emefiele’s tenure as CBN governor is expected to come to an end on June 3, 2019.
