The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Bayelsa chapter, has said that only Nigerians can sustain democracy in the country by their collective resolve.
Mr Tari Dounana, the state Chairman of the congress, said this in an interview with NAN on Friday in Yenagoa.
He, therefore, urged politicians to play politics by the rules of the game.
Dounana said that the 16-year-old democratic rule had been a blessing to Nigeria, adding that peaceful co-existence among citizens would further move the political system forward.
“TUC is also preaching free and fair elections in Bayelsa; my advice to all Nigerians as we are set to cast our votes on March 28 is to conduct ourselves peacefully.
“Politics is not a do or die affair; remember that violence can destroy the already existing democracy in the country.
“Youths must not allow themselves to be used for thuggery or to cause violence.
“I urge all the political candidates in Bayelsa and Nigeria at large, to show spirit of sportsmanship and ensure that Nigeria have the most credible elections.
“We must know that Nigeria is one and we will continue to be one for the betterment of our dear nation.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should also ensure that the elections area free, fair and credible; this is the first major step towards preserving our democracy,” Dounana further said.
