Nigeria Super Eagles are back to winning ways as they stretched their Sierra Leonian visitors to win 2-1 in the opening Group A duel of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

They had to come back from a goal down to win 2-1. It is their first victory in six matches since losing 1-0 to Tunisia at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Playing in an empty MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, Jonathan Morsay unrattled the hosts with a flying header to give Sierra Leone 1-0 lead after 11th minute the same time that Ghana scored the back-breaking goal that denied Nigeria the qualification for the World Cup.

The Leone Stars almost doubled their lead as Morsay’s shot again beat Goalkeeper Uzoho, but hit the base of the goalpost.

Alex Iwobi redeemed the game for Nigeria when he levelled up in the 16th minute. Three minutes to the end of the first half, hard-working Victor Osimhen stretched to loop a right-wing cross into the net.

The Sierra Leoneans put up more zeal in the second half to curtail the attacking forays of the Super Eagles.

As the game stretched into added time, they were even more ferocious, struggling for a possible equaliser.

The Super Eagles will on Monday in Morocco face Sao Tome and Principe in Agadir, Morocco.
