The Department of State Services (DSS) on Monday denied arresting Ibrahim Magu, the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), even as it barred journalists from gaining access to the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where Magu was being grilled by a Federal Government panel over corruption allegations.
News of Magu’s arrest by the DSS broke on Monday.
However, Peter Afunanya, the DSS Public Relations Officer, said they had nothing to do with the arrest.
In a statement titled, “OFFICIAL: Magu is Not Arrested by DSS,” and released by PRNigeria, a press release distribution agency in Nigeria, Ifunnaya said the DSS has since been inundated with inquiries over the arrest of Magu, stressing that the Service has no connection with the incident.
The statement read: “The Department of State Services (DSS) wishes to inform the public that it did not arrest Ibrahim MAGU, Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as has been reported by sections of the media.
“The Service, has since, today, 6th July, 2020, been inundated with enquiries over the alleged arrest.”
Meanwhile, when State House Correspondents went over to the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa where Magu was being queried to know what the issues were, DSS operatives asked them to leave the premises.
