Driver’s licence issuance increases but some left uncollected

Issuance of driver’s licence generated more than N26.2 billion for the federal treasury in 2022, as computed in the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Statistical Digest which shows a total 1,007,948 licences were issued.
The average cost of a driver’s licence in 2022 for three and five years validity for both new and renewal is N26,000.
But a new licence valid for three years now costs N30,000 and renewal costs N17, 000. A five-year licence goes for N35,000 and renewal N22,000.
The FIRS report encompasses data from all the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
It said 143,686 driver’s licences were issued in the first quarter of 2022 (Q1 2022), 333,752 (Q2 2022), 272,324 (Q3 2022), and 258,186 (Q4 2022), a drop of 5.2 per cent.

Production of driver’s licences by state
Per reporting by The PUNCH, The FRSC said a total 1,007,948 licences were produced in 2022, with the top five states listed as follows:
- Lagos – 137,814
- FCT – 52,880
- Delta – 60,527
- Ogun – 37,682
- Oyo – 27,402
FRSC Directorate of Road Traffic Services in the FCT disclosed earlier in the year it has more than 15,000 driver’s licences uncollected with Oyo having 6,138 uncollected.
Road traffic deaths reduce 23% in M9 2023
Road traffic deaths reduced 23.1 per cent in the first nine months of the year to September (M9 2023), the FRSC announced in October.
Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO) Bisi Kazeem explained in a statement issued in Abuja road traffic crashes (RTCs) slashed 22 per cent, road injuries (21.3 per cent), and road traffic deaths (23.1 per cent) compared with M9 2022.
“The corps recorded a total of 7,830 road traffic crashes as against 10,039 in the same period in the year 2022, representing a 22% decrease,” he said.
“From January to September 2023, the corps also achieved a 21.3% reduction in number of people rescued with injuries.
”The corps rescued a total of 22,580 in 2023 against 28,698 injured victims from January to September of the year 2022.
“According to the crash data report, in the first 9 months of the year 2023, the corps recorded a total of 3,730 fatalities as against 4,848 in the same period in the year 2022, representing a 23.1% reduction.
“It is expedient to inform the public that the highest achievement was recorded in the third quarter of 2023 (July to September).
“In the 3rd quarter, the corps reduced RTCs by 37.6% having reduced crashes from 3,412 in 2022 to 2,130 in year 2023.
“Road traffic injuries were also reduced from 9,258 in the year 2022 to 5,864 in 2023 representing a 36.7% reduction.
“Also, road traffic deaths were also reduced from 1,470 in the year 2022 to 880 in the year 2023, representing a 40% reduction in the number of people killed.”
