Driver, labourer bag 1 month imprisonment each for theft

A Senior Magistrates’ Court in Life Camp, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced a driver, Samson Moses, 35, and a labourer, Sunday Adamu, 32, to one month in prison each for stealing a motorcycle.

The convicts, Moses and Adamu both of Sabon Wuse in Niger State, were charged with three counts of joint act, causing hurt and theft.

The Senior Magistrate, Mrs Asma’u Akanbi, sentenced the accused persons after finding them guilty.

Akanbi did not give the convicts an option of fine.

“I hereby sentence you both to one month imprisonment each without option of fine.’’

“Though you both begged for leniency, you must be punished in order to serve as deterrent to others who may commit same offence.”

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Cpl Simon Emmanuel, told the court that Mohammed Abubakar of Daki Biyu, Abuja, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station on May 25.

Emmanuel said on the same date, the complainant gave the convicts a ride on his motorcycle from Wuye to Angwan Rogo in the FCT and while on transit they ordered him to park because one of them wanted to ease himself.

He said immediately he stopped, the convicts suddenly began to drag the motorcycle from the complainant’s grips, adding that they twisted his wrist and stole the motorcycle.

Emmenual said that the convicts were apprehended by the police.
