Don cautions pregnant women over patronage of quacks for ultrasound scans

Prof Kenneth Agwu from the Department of Radiography and Radiology Sciences, University of Nigeria Enugu Campus has cautioned pregnant women against patronizing quack medical radiography for ultrasound scans.
He gave the advice during the 2018 World Radiography Day organised by Association of Radiographers of Nigeria (ARN), Enugu State chapter held at UNN, Enugu campus recently.
Agwu also advised the public especially pregnant mothers to always visit certified medical radiography professionals for ultrasound scans and other X-ray related problems, saying, “the public should visit certified Radiographers in the hospitals because they are professionally well trained people. You should not patronize quacks because they are so many quacks everywhere both in ultrasound practice. The danger is that they expose you to the effect of radiation which sometimes can manifest in generation after you have given birth, therefore we should exercise caution and do the needful so mothers should not expose their unborn babies to such danger.
“Quackery is a serious practice in the society particularly in radiation. It’s very dangerous because they could over expose the person and the baby in the womb will become defective. Even the person itself can manifest some dangers of excessive radiation dose and you may not be helped by that particular exposure and that might give you wrong diagnosis which can lead to wrong treatment, so we should avoid visiting someone who is not qualified,” he added.
