The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Alhassan Doguwa winner of the Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency election in Kano.

INEC returning officer, Sani Ibrahim, who announced the results on Saturday, said the lawmaker secured 41,573 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Yushau Salisu of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, who got 34,831 votes.

The Saturday supplementary election was held in eight wards in Tudunwada LGA.

INEC had announced Doguwa as the winner of the February 25 election for the federal constituency but later declared it inconclusive.

There were reports of over-voting and disruption of voting in some polling units in the area.

At the time the election was declared inconclusive, Doguwa, the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, was leading with 39,732 votes while Salisu had 34,798 votes.

Doguwa’s victory comes weeks after he was charged with murder by the police for allegedly killing three people during the 25 February election.

The lawmaker was involved in a violent confrontation between members of the NNPP and the All Progressives Congress (APC) that led to the killing of three people and the burning of a campaign office of the opposition party in the Tudun Wada Local Government Area of Kano.

Doguwa’s victory means he has been elected for a fifth term.
