Delta State Internal Revenue has flagged off the collection of tax from the informal sector.
Finance Commissioner, David Edevbie, said an informal sector operator could pay as low as N1,000 per month based on the presumptive tax regime.
Payments could be made daily depending on the system agreed with the payer.
Delta has realised that the majority of informal sector operators are not captured in the tax net, and their associations and unions have been identified as the platform for generating significant collections.
“The board shall work directly with the leadership of all these groups in a bid to get their members’ buy-in which should eventually generate a multiplier effect in tax collection in the near medium to long term,”Edevbie said.
Tax officers would visit these groups in their locations for online registration, and they would be given a unique code to be presented when making payments in banks.
The code will be used to update records and the leadership of each association or union isexpected to collect contributions and remit at intervals to the government account in designated banks.
