Customs suspends 3 for extortion at Abuja Airport

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has suspended three Assistant Superintendents of Customs for extorting 13,000 dollars from a passenger at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

 

 

The Public Relations Officer of NCS, Mr Wale Adeniyi, made this known during interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday.

“The officers extorted the money during the outward clearance of the passenger on Emirates Airline flight.

 

 

“The three officers have been suspended from service. They are all Assistant Superintendents of Customs and working with Currency Declaration Desk at the airport.

 

 

“When interrogated, they agreed that they collected the money and offered to refund it to the passenger’’, Adeniyi said.

 

 

He said the Comptroller-General of Customs, Dikko Abdullahi, expressed regrets with the involvement of some officers in various illegal acts.

 

 

According to him, the comptroller general has warned that the service will not tolerate sharp practices that could tarnish the good image of the service.
