Top officials of the Nigeria Customs Service and Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) have resolved to collaborate on security at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
They made the resolution at a meeting in Abuja, sequel to the fracas at the MMIA last month in which Customs officials beat up FAAN security officers.
The Customs delegation was led by its Comptroller General, Dikko Abdullahi, that of FAAN was led by its Managing Director, Saleh Dunoma.
The meeting reviewed the facts of the event and resolved to have consultations to facilitate airport security. Decision was taken to maintain peace and order among officials of the two government agencies.
Both Abdullahi and Dunoma expressed regret over the incident.
The meeting also resolved that
• Abdullahi will investigate the involvement of Customs officers and take appropriate punitive action if any is found guilty.
• He will review current deployments at MMIA to ensure only officers who meet the requirement of civility are retained.
• FAAN will not restrict the movement of Customs officers deployed to MMIA but will control access to ensure security in line with global standards.
• Operations in airports will be guided by procedures established by law.
• Conflicts in the roles of the Customs and FAAN will be harmonised through a joint legal committee in line with international best practice.
