Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara has ordered the closure of Sunday weekly market in Tsafe town, Tsafe Local Government area, as part of measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.
The state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Alhaji Sulaiman Tunau, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gusau on Saturday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Tunau is also the Chairman, Publicity Sub-committee of the State Taskforce on Control and Prevention of COVID-19, under the leadership of the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Alhaji Nasiru Magarya
According to the commissioner, the shutting down of the market takes effect from April 19.
“Last week, the state government shut down Gurbinbore International Market for same reason.
“Tsafe weekly market is also a meeting point for traders from neighbouring states, especially Katsina and Kaduna.
“This is part of the measures being taken by government to prevent the state from COVID-19,” he said.
According to him, this is an indication of government’s commitment to the protection of the lives of the citizens.
The commissioner appealed to the people of the state to continue to comply with government’s directives on safety measures, such as improved hygiene and social distancing. (NAN)
