COVID-19: FG to announce next phase of lockdown Tuesday, gives reason for low death rate in Nigeria

PTF Chairman, Mr Boss Mustapha

The Federal Government is expected to announce the next phase of eased lockdown in the country on Tuesday (tomorrow).

Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, made this known on Monday.

Meanwhile, the PTF also on Monday cited the prevalence of the disease among the younger generation as reason for the low death rate in Nigeria.

Mustapha made the claim while speaking to State House Correspondents after briefing President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday.

According to him, around 80 per cent of the infected persons were between the ages of 31 and 40 years, an active demography, which he noted that even when they have the infection, they are able to surmount it because of their level of energy.

He, however, noted that the PTF was worried about the remaining 20% as he said nobody knows who may become victim among them, adding that everything was being done to protect them.

He also hinted that government may introduce precision lockdown for pinpoint management of coronavirus hotspots.

According to him, 18 out of the 774 local governments in the country have been identified as responsible for 60% of the confirmed cases in the country.

He added that the reason for the precision lockdown will be to place specific measures in certain places especially by state governments to enable aggressive testing for the disease and management.
