Court sentences man to six months of religious studies for theft

Abilah Damina, the convict, told the police during the investigation that he was hungry and looking for money to buy food.

The judge found the man guilty of theft and convicted him of the crime. However, the convict pleaded for clemency. He was therefore offered an option of N20,000 fine plus the compulsory attendance of a religious studies for six months

A man, Abilah Damina, has been found guilty of stealing by a Grade I Area Court in Karu Abuja. The court, on Thursday, ordered Abilah Damina, who is a welder, to undergo six months imprisonment with intensive religious studies for stealing a  gate rail iron worth N15,000.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Judge, Inuwa Maiwada, sentenced Damina, who lives in Gidan Mangoro, Abuja after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy and theft, and offered him an option to pay a fine of N20,000.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Ade Adeyanju, told the court that Abilah Damina stole the material with the help of security men and others within the area.

Adeyanju said during investigation, the convict told the police that he was hungry and looking for money to buy food.

He said the matter was reported at the Jikwoyi Police Station by James Victor who lives opposite the Army Estate, Kurudu in the FCT, Abuja.

He said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 348, 327, 287 of the Penal Code.
