Court dissolves six-year-old marriage over husband’s lack of care

A Mararaba Upper Area Court, Nasarawa State, on Tuesday dissolved the 6-year -old marriage between Rukayya Jibrin, and her husband, Garba Tanko, over lack of care.

The judge, Ibrahim Shakarau, dissolved the marriage in the interest of peace, saying that the parties have ceased to be husband and wife henceforth.

“The parties are to maintain peace all the time, any violation of the order of this court will amount to contempt and of course with grave consequences.

“Also the parties should collect their divorce certificate from the registrar’s office,’’ he ordered.

The judge advised the petitioner to observe her `iddah’ (a period a woman must observed after the death of her spouse or divorced) according to Islam rites, for three months before she can re-marry.

Rukayya had told the court that she was married to the respondent since 2012 and the union did not produce any child.

“He no longer has sex with me, for the past one month he has not entered my room and has stopped feeding me.

“My husband and his family members do not care about me. They never regarded nor look at me as a human being; they disrespect me at every slight opportunity.

“Please, let this honourable court separate us, there is no longer love in the union and nothing can bring us together again,’’ she said.

The respondent who was absent in court, sent a letter, not objecting to the separation, but asked the court to grant the petitioner’s request.(NAN)
