Malaysia’s highest court on Tuesday jailed a former state Chief Minister for one year for corruption while in office.
Khir Toyo, the former minister’s plea for a community service sentence was also rejected.
Toyo was accused of using his position to buy real estate at a much lower rate than the MARKET value.
Delivering the sentence, Federal Court Chief Judge Zulkefli Makinudin said a lighter sentence of community service and a fine was inadequate for the offence.
The court also ordered the forfeiture of the real estate.
The court said Toyo paid only 3.5 million ringgit (784,000 dollars) for the two plots of land and a house on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur in 2007 with an assessed value of at least 6.5 million ringgit.
