Cooking gas price shoots up 9% MoM

Cooking gas (liquefied petroleum gas, LPG) refill price for a 12.5kg cylinder rose 69.15 per cent from N9,194.41 in August 2023 (M8 2023) to N15,552.56 in M8 2024, according to the latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

It jumped 9.05 per cent month-on-month (MoM) from N14,261.57 in July 2024.

The average retail price of a 5kg cylinder rose 56.25 per cent from N4,115.32 in M8 2023 to N6,430.02 in M8 2024 and 7.62 per cent MoM from N5,974.55 in July 2024 to N6,430.02 in August.

Highest 5kg prices by state

The NBS disclosed the highest prices YoY by state as follows:

  • Benue – N7,000
  • Sokoto – N7,000
  • Rivers – N6,954.55
  • Borno – N6,914.29

Lowest 5kg prices by state

  • Taraba – N5,600.67
  • Abuja – N5,825
  • Kogi – N5,857.56

Highest 5kg prices by region

South East – N6,585.18

South South – N6,451.34

North Central – N6,344.29

“On state profile analysis, Rivers recorded the highest average retail price for the refilling of a 12.5kg Cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) with N17,086.36 followed by Cross River with N17,050.00 and Abia with N17,012.52.

“Conversely, the lowest average price was recorded in Bauchi with N13,425.00, followed by Nasarawa and Adamawa with N13,640.94 and N13,725.00 respectively” the NBS said.
