In a thrilling start to Euro 2024, Francisco Conceicao’s late goal secured a dramatic 2-1 victory for Portugal against the Czech Republic in their Group F opener. The 21-year-old winger, who plays for Porto, scored just minutes after being substituted on, capitalizing on a loose ball in the box after the Czech defense failed to clear a cross.
The Czech Republic initially took the lead through Lukas Provod’s spectacular strike from the edge of the box just after the hour mark, catching Portugal off guard and putting them behind despite their dominance.
Cristiano Ronaldo, playing in a record-extending sixth European Championship, led a determined Portuguese side. Although Ronaldo was denied by Czech goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek on multiple occasions, Portugal managed to equalize when Robin Hranac scored an own goal after Stanek parried a header from Nuno Mendes into his path.
Portugal’s coach, Roberto Martinez, made a notable selection by including 41-year-old defender Pepe, who became the oldest player in Euros history, surpassing the previous record held by Hungary’s goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly.
Despite Portugal’s struggle to find their rhythm, midfielder Vitinha praised the team’s resilience. “We showed all our coolness and resilience,” he said. “We remained calm, got the draw, and always believed until the end to get the win. Luckily we managed to do it with the help of the players who came on… we are truly a team.”

The Czech Republic, under new coach Ivan Hasek, effectively stifled Portugal for much of the match. Hasek, who took over in January, saw his team frustrate their opponents, who had qualified unbeaten for the tournament.
Portugal had numerous opportunities to score, with Ronaldo and Diogo Jota both coming close. Ronaldo hit the post and Jota’s follow-up was disallowed for offside. Stanek was instrumental in keeping the score level, making crucial saves to deny Ronaldo in his record 26th Euros appearance.
As the match neared its conclusion, Francisco Conceicao’s late heroics ensured Portugal secured the win, putting them level with Turkey at the top of Group F. Reflecting on the match, Czech midfielder Provod acknowledged Portugal’s quality. “Of course it hurts extremely badly, although nobody completely thought we would prevail today,” he said. “The goals we conceded did not come after well put together attacks, but we have to acknowledge Portugal’s quality. The goals came from the enormous pressure.”
Portugal, who won the tournament in 2016, aim to add another title to their collection, with Ronaldo stating their ambitions clearly despite the shaky start. The team’s next match will be closely watched as they continue their campaign in Germany.
