A group based in South Africa, Nigerian Lives Matter, has asked the Nigerian Senate to commence public hearing on the Lekki Toll Gate shootings.

Peaceful protesters were reportedly shot at by the military during the #EndSARS protest in Lekki on October 20 which, according to Amnesty International, led to at least 12 deaths.

The Nigerian Lives Matter, a group based in South Africa formed to protect Nigerians from Xenophobic attacks, said the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, should lead the charge in setting up the investigative hearing to unravel what transpired on the night of the shooting.

In a petition signed by its Founder, Debo Adesina, Nigerian Lives Matter said the investigation should be aimed at bringing the perpetrators to book to prevent future occurrence.

“This action by the men in military uniform is condemnable, against international best practices and capable of causing chaos nationwide if not properly investigated and nipped in the bud with adequate disciplinary action.

“It is on this basis that we call for an investigation as to what really transpired that night at Lekki Toll Gate,” he said.
