Cleric warns against ‘harmful music’

A cleric in Niger State, Rev. Fr. Christian Achinivu, has admonished
musicians and others in the entertainment industry on the need to
consider the moral implications of musics and clips they churn out to
the Nigerian public to avoid negative consequences.
Achinivu of the the Catholic Diocese of Minna, emphasized the
need for musicians to check the contents of their songs to ensure they do not contain harmful messages that run contrary to the building
of a morally sound society.
“Many of the musicians today rarely care about the contents of their songs, the message content, what the music potrays about them, their
immediate family, society and Nigeria as a whole. The songs are not
only harmful but the genre also runs contrary to expection of
Nigerians”, he said.
Achinivu, popularly called, “Father Paiko” in religious and social
circles, also
wondered why many of the present day musicians care little about the
message in their song before releasing such for public consumption.

The Catholic Priest argued, “Words convey meanings and ideas while ideas exercise control and influence over people positively or
negatively. Our songs should be harmless to the listening public who, want to enjoy not only the sound but the creativity we make in the
songs”.
