UCL: Chelsea get tough draw, as City, Liverpool face Spanish, Portuguese oppositions

Chelsea are the holders of the title and the West London club have won the Champions League two times in their history

Champions League’s last 8 draws took place on Friday, March 18 at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, as three English clubs, three Spanish clubs, one Portuguese club, and one German outfit waited to know who they would face.  

The holders Chelsea were handed a tough fixture against Spanish giants Real Madrid with the first leg scheduled to take place at Stamford Bridge. 

Premier League leaders, Manchester City will face Atletico Madrid, the conquerors of their local rival, Manchester United, they will also host the first leg at the Etihad.

Carabao Cup winners, Liverpool will travel to giant-killers Benfica, who edged out four-time winners, Ajax.  

While the surprise team, Villarreal, who dispatched Serie A heavyweights Juventus in the round of 16 will host Bundesliga powerhouse, Bayern Munich. 

In the semi-finals, the winner of the Chelsea v Real Madrid tie will face Atletico Madrid or Manchester City, while Benfica or Liverpool will play either Villarreal or Bayern Munich.

The double-header quarter-finals take place on 5-6 April and 12-13 April, while the first legs of the semi-finals will be on 26-27 April and the second legs on 3-4 May. 

The finals of this year’s Champions League will be played at the Stade de France in Paris on Saturday, 28 May after it was moved from St Petersburg because Russia invaded Ukraine.
