The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has reiterated its call for Nigeria’s spiritual regeneration, social reformation as well as economic and political reconstruction.
The CBCN made the point after a meeting in Port Harcourt, where it also slammed the proponents of same-sex marriage, commending the federal government for standing by it to reject the idea.
“We were worried about a culture that would distort our understanding of marriage and family. We saw that there was an attempted invasion of or even usurpation of our moral cultural and spiritual space by those who work to impose same-sex union and felt that our moral pillars were being shaken, hence we vehemently opposed it,” the group said in a communique.
The bishops commended President Muhammadu Buhari’s philosophy of change, saying it opens another window of opportunity for Nigerians not merely to change but also to have a conversion of heart.
They applauded “the growing demand by Nigerians for higher economic and political performance accompanied with high ethical standards” for which “Buhari has decided to provide the moral leadership” having “identified corruption as the monster that must be dealt a fatal blow.”
They noted that “corruption has polluted even the minds of children in primary school as he or she has to worry about bringing something to bribe the teacher, and students worry about sleeping with their teachers to obtain good grades while parents buy grades or patronise miracle exam centres.”
