Pundit and Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher, has slammed his former club for signing PSV academy graduate, Cody Gakpo in the January transfer window.

Carragher wondered why the Reds signed the Netherlands international, who does not seem to fit the kind of player Jurgen Klopp wants.

The former England defender noted that Gakpo is unlikely to dethrone the players who play in his position at the club, claiming he would go back to the bench once all the other Liverpool forwards are fit.

Carragher wrote in The Telegraph: “I am baffled watching Gakpo’s early performances.

“Gakpo is not a typical Klopp signing, lacking lightning pace and the capacity to lead a high press.

“Why commit up to £45 million on someone who will be on the bench when Diaz and Diogo Jota are fit?” He added.

The 23-year-old Gakpo joined Liverpool from Dutch club, PSV for a fee that could rise to £45m with add-ons.

His first goal for the club helped them to move into the ninth position on the Premier League table after their 2-0 win over Everton in the Merseyside derby on Monday night.

Mohamed Salah grabbed Liverpool’s opener in the 36th minute of the game with his first Premier League goal for the club this year.
